Rory McIlroy explains how he will finally win the Masters this year
Rory McIlroy has stated he needs to remain patient on the golf course and not “push too much too early” to ensure he wins more tournaments in 2019.
McIlroy played in his first event of the year at the weekend, eventually going on to finish T-4 at the Sentry Tournament of Champions in Hawaii.
While it was an impressive finish in Hawaii, it was the 29-year-olds 19th tournament in a row that he has failed to win.
However, the Northern Irishman is adamant he now knows what hes doing wrong and how he can return to winning ways for the rest of year, including at Augusta.

For me I started a lot of these final rounds like two back, three back, McIlroy said.

I was three back of Tiger at the Tour Championship, three back of Justin Thomas, I was level with Francesco [Molinari] at Wentworth. I was three or two or three back of Patrick Reed at the Masters.
So just pushing a little too much too early and trying to really force myself to hitting shots or hitting it into positions where I dont really need to and just being patient, its 18 holes. A lot can happen in 18 holes.
Ive been six ahead with seven to play and just crept over the line or Ive been five behind with nine to play and had a chance to win on the last green. So a lot can change in a final round.

I just forced the issue a little bit too much. My best round of the year [in 2018] was Bay Hill and I always go back to that and I should have learned from that.
I wasnt in the final group but I was two behind Henrik [Stenson] going into the final day and I was even par after six or five holes and I could have been 3- or 4-under, but I just stayed really patient and just tried to play golf and let it happen and that patience was rewarded that day.

So thats the sort of mindset I need to try to get back into.
This year will be McIlroys 11th appearance at Augusta, and he has finished in the top 10 during the last five years.
