Coronavirus latest updates: 169 confirmed cases in India; Sensex crashes over 2,100 points

NEW DELHI: The outbreak of coronavirus worsened on Wednesday with 27 new cases reported by 11 different states and Union territories bringing the total number of confirmed cases in the country to 169, including three deaths. Across the world, the virus has infected over 200,000 and killed more than 8,000 people.
Here is a look at the latest updates on the spread of novel coronavirus (Covid-19) in India and around the world —
169 cofirmed coronavirus cases in India
As per the latest information released by the Union health ministry, the total number of confirmed cases in India touched 169, including 25 foreigners. Fifteen out of the 169 patients have either been cured, discharged or have migrated out of India. There have been three deaths from the virus.
Two more test positive in Maharashtra, total cases rises to 47
A 22-year-old woman tested positive for coronavirus in Mumbai. The woman has travel history to the United Kingdom. One more person, a 49-year-old woman from Ulhasnagar, tested positive on Thursday. She has travel history to Dubai. With these two new caases, the total number of positive cases in the state reached 47.
10 states/UTs report new cases, the most in a day
As many as 10 states and Union territories reported fresh Covid-19 cases on Wednesday, taking the total count in the country so far to 171. This is so far the highest number of states/UTs reporting new cases — and the highest count of 27—in a single day. The Union health ministry has confirmed 151 cases so far.
In a worrying sign, the cases were reported from a large geographical area—eight from Telangana, four in Maharashtra, three each in Rajasthan and Karnataka, 2 from Delhi and UP, one each in Haryana, Ladakh, J&K, Chandigarh and TN.
Mumbai prepares to quarantine 26,000 Indians coming from Gulf
The Mumbai civic body prepared to receive around 26,000 Indians expected to land in the city between Thursday and March 31 from Covid-19-hit Gulf nations such as the UAE, Kuwait, Qatar and Oman.
Twenty-three flights come to Mumbai from these countries every day. According to the Centres guidelines, all arrivals from the UAE, Kuwait, Qatar and Oman are to be quarantined for 14 days starting March 18.
Sensex crashes over 2,100 points; Nifty below 7,900
Equity indices continued to plunge on Thursday amid the coronavirus-led global sell off. The benchmark BSE sensex tanked 2,120 points or 7.34 per cent to 26,750; while the broader NSE Nifty moved 575 points or 6.79 per cent lower to 7,894. On Wednesday, the Sensex had crashed another 1,710 points to close at 28,870 with banking & financial stocks, along with RIL, leading the slide as fears of a coronavirus-induced recession continued.
At Wednesdays close, at about the 28,900 level, the Sensex was down almost 32% from its all-time intraday peak of 42,274, recorded just two months back, on January 20.
Results of 820 samples in, no community spread so far
All the 820 randomly collected samples of persons suffering from severe acute respiratory infection have tested negative, providing scientific evidence that community transmission is yet to manifest itself.
The process of taking samples of those not in the “zone of risk” of people who have been abroad or have been in touch with them will continue. The possibility of community spread — when the virus is found in a patient who has neither travelled nor been in contact with such a person — remains.
255 Indians in Iran tested +ve for Covid-19
It took meetings with foreign minister S Jaishankar and senior MEA officials as well as persuasion by prominent Shia leaders to get Indians stranded in Iran, who are negative for Covid-19, to return home even as there was official confirmation that 255 Indian pilgrims have tested positive for the disease.
