Manchester United remain determined to hold onto David de Gea though will sell him if long-time suitors Real Madrid make a record-shattering offer this summer, according to reports.

The Spanish giants have been chasing the goalkeeper for years and were a fax machine error away from signing him in a player-plus-cash deal that involved Keylor Navas back in 2015.

While De Gea ultimately stayed at Old Trafford and signed a new contract at the club, Real president Florentino’s desire to bring him to the Bernabeu has remained as strong as ever.

With the club having struggled this season, Real are preparing for a massive summer splurge and Spanish newspaper Sport say they will make a renewed effort to sign De Gea.

He is the top priority of Perez, ahead even of Harry Kane and Eden Hazard, however they have been warned that United will not sell unless they receive an offer of £115m.

That figure would work out at three times the current transfer record for a goalkeeper, which is currently the £34.7m that Manchester City paid for Ederson.

Despite the potential to make an enormous profit on De Gea, the Red Devils still hope to persuade him to sign a new deal, with his current contract expiring in 2019 – though United can trigger a one-year extension.

However, United are believed to have drawn up a list of potential replacements for De Gea should he leave which is topped by Everton shot-stopper Jordan Pickford.

If Real are unsuccessful in their pursuit of De Gea they will try to bring former Atletico keeper Thibaut Courtois back to Madrid, with the Belgian out of contract with Chelsea in 18 months and keen on a return to Spain.
