Conor McGregor has announced he intends to return to the UFC, and stated he put himself forward to fight Frankie Edgar at UFC 222 after Max Holloway’s withdrawal but his offer was rejected.

UFC 222 is currently headlined by Cris Cyborg’s featherweight title defence against Yana Kunitskaya on March 3, with Edgar now scheduled to fight Brian Ortega on the same card.

McGregor remains the current UFC lightweight champion despite persistent talk of him potentially being stripped due to his inactivity. He last fought in an Octagon back at UFC 205 in November 2016.

However, the Irishman announced via social media that he plans to return to cage fighting and that his offer to fight Edgar was stopped due to financial issues.

‘I put my name forward to step in at UFC 222 to face Frankie Edgar when Max Holloway pulled out,’ McGregor said in an Instagram post. ‘But I was told there wasn’t enough time to generate the money that the UFC would need.

‘I was excited about bouncing in last minute and taking out the final featherweight, without all the rest of the stuff that comes with this game.’

McGregor was last seen in action against Floyd Mayweather Jr in a boxing ring back in August 2017, and while there’s been talk of a potential rematch, nothing has materialised.

His latest social media post comes off the back of Dana White’s confirmation that the UFC plan to strip McGregor of his UFC title in the coming weeks.

The Irishman has been stripped once before when the UFC took away his featherweight belt soon after McGregor had become a two-weight champion in late 2016.
