Surrey boost trophy charge with signing of Virat Kohli

Surrey have boosted their chances of winning a first major trophy since 2011 by signing India skipper Virat Kohli.

Kohli, who averages more than 50 in all formats for his country, will join Surrey once his duties with Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Indian Premier League are complete.

The 29-year-old will feature in three County Championship matches and at least three One-Day Cup matchesin June, while Indian cricket bosses hope a month in county cricket will help Kohli adapt to English conditions prior to the summers Test series between the two nations.

“Were thrilled to have signed the biggest name in world cricket for the month of June,” said Surrey director of cricket Alec Stewart. “Playing and training alongside Virat will be a massive benefit for our players, who will have the opportunity to learn so much from him.”

Kohli, who is set to feature in County Championship matches against Hampshire, Somerset and Yorkshire, said: “Its long been an ambition of mine to play county cricket and Im thankful to Alec Stewart and Surrey for allowing me the opportunity.”
