Jose Mourinho feared the worst when Phil Jones stepped up to take a spot-kick in Manchester Uniteds penalty shootout defeat to Derby in the Carabao Cup.

Jones poor effort was denied by Scott Carson after 16 faultless penalties at Old Trafford and the save secured Derbys place in the fourth round of the competition.

Frank Lampards Derby had 53 per cent of the possession against United and goals from Harry Wilson and Jack Marriott, to cancel out Juan Matas opener, looked to have wrapped up the match in normal time.

However, Marouane Fellainis scrambled effort from close-range took the game to a shootout before Derbys players were able to keep their cool from 12 yards.

We practice penalties and we see it in training and when we get past the sixth penalty I know were in trouble with [Eric] Bailly and Jones, Mourinho told Sky Sports after the final whistle.

Mourinho criticised Uniteds forwards for failing to kill off Derbys chances when opportunities arose.

We didnt score when we could, we could in the first half, we had situations to kill it, he said.

At half-time I repeated the same words as the last match. We didnt kill the game. We couldnt be dominant in the second half.

I prefer to be proactive and go for it. After the red card we are in a bit of difficulty. We reacted with pride, we tried until the last second.
