Who is Nirbhaya case lawyer AP Singh?

NEW DELHI: Advocating for two death-row convicts in the Nirbhaya gang rape murder case, lawyer AP Singh, is not only known for his controversial remarks on gender-related crimes but has been repeatedly condemned for using loopholes in the law to defer execution of death penalty.
Singh, lawyer of Akshay Singh and Pawan Kumar Gupta, the two of the four convicts in the Nirbhaya case, first became controversial when he criticised the Nirbhaya case victim's lifestyle, blaming her for the crime that resulted in her death.
In September 2013, the lawyer had said that he would have burned her daughter alive had she been having premarital sex and moving around at night with her boyfriend.
Referring to the 23-year-old victim in the December 16 incident, Singh had told the media in reply to a question, "…if my daughter was having premarital sex and moving around at night with her boyfriend, I would have burnt her alive. I would not have let this situation happen. All parents should adopt such an attitude."
The remarks, quite expectedly, outraged the nation over victim-shaming, given the already high tempers in the backdrop of the brutal rape and murder committed.
Building an antagonist image for himself, Singh's insistence of his clients' innocence has often been heavily criticised, given the Court held the accused guilty.
After Singh had argued that one of the convicts is not mentally fit pleading against the death warrant, Asha Devi, mother of the Nirbhaya victim, had accused Singh of "delaying justice" and had said that it was the lawyer who needed rest and not the convict.
