These are the most used fashion words of 2017
What word would you use to sum up fashion in 2017?
Our personal style would probably be summed up with ‘jumpers’ or ‘that same pair of jeans over and over again’.
But in the actual legit fashion world, certain words have popped up over and over again to give us a sense of what we were keen on wearing in the last twelve months.
Global fashion search engine Lyst has analysed more than 30,000 online articles from 100 different fashion and lifestyle publications from the past year to find the most used fashion words of the year, looking at the most frequently occurring combinations and using sentiment analysis to find the popular words with the most importance.
Topping the list was ‘power’, making it the fashion word of the year.
I guess we’ve been really into powerful colours, powerful shapes, and general displays of power. Perhaps this indicates fashion’s way of fighting back against all the injustice and political madness of the past year.
The runners up on the list continue that theme, with ‘woke’ coming in second place and ‘statement’ in third.
The top 10 most used fashion words of 2017:
- Power
- Woke
- Statement
- Floral
- Millenial
- Extra
- Masculine
- Cult
- Ugly
- Vegan
It’s worth noting that ‘vegan’ makes the list, too. Perhaps this is the year fashion’s really committed to having a conscience.
Lyst also gathered data on what we were actually wearing in the past year, not just the words we were using, finding that 2017 was a colourful year (red, pink, and yellow were top colour choices) in which we loved statement earrings, luxury socks, and all things unicorn.
Weird trends of 2017:
- Crazy denim
- Fashion fruits
- Unicorns
- Extreme sleeves
- Lux socks
The search engine also tracked our favourite celebrity styles of the year. Of course, Rihanna was on top, because she is on top for everything.
