Petr Cech hits out at Bernd Lenos former club Bayer Leverkusen after being mocked for error against Manchester City

Petr Cech has hit back at Bayer Leverkusen after he was mocked by the German clubs Twitter account for his mistake in Arsenals defeat to Manchester City on Sunday.

The 36-year-old has been tasked with playing the ball out from the back by new Gunners boss Unai Emery but the tactic nearly backfired in the first half against the Premier League champions.

After receiving a backpass from midfielder Matteo Guendouzi, Cech came close to passing the ball into his own net.

Arsenals supporters ironically cheered minutes later when Cech opted against another short pass from a goal kick and instead went for a longer ball to a teammate.

Cech surprisingly started ahead of £22 million summer signing Bernd Leno and the Germans former club Bayer Leverkusen took the opportunity to mock Cech on Twitter for his error against City.

But on Monday, Cech fired back at the Bundesliga side by suggesting that they have not shown professionalism and sportsmanship.

Asked about his mistake after the game, Cech told NBC Sports: My intention was to take a touch and pass it but then suddenly I realised it could possibly be a through pass into midfield.

I took my eyes off the ball and then I went with the initial thought of passing it to the right, and you know sometimes when you take your eyes off the ball anything can happen.

I have to say, at that moment when I hit the ball, I knew it was going wide – but it didnt look good!
